Soybean harvest is wrapping up and corn harvest is rapidly advancing as last week’s dry weather and a dry forecast this week are allowing farmers to get some work done.
Soybean yields have been all over the board. The word used most often by farmers has been “variable”. Within the field the yield monitors are showing wide ranges from 0 to nearly 100 bushels per acre within the same pass across the field. Overall yields have been slightly better than expected considering the spring and summer weather combination of cold/wet changing to hot/dry.
Corn harvest is beginning to hit for many farmers southeast of Storm Lake. Variability will also be high as combines cross the fields. A couple miles is making a big difference in whole farm yields as an extra 1/2 inch of
rain at the right time may have been just what was needed.
