Our thoughts and prayers to all the hurricane victims in the Southeast U.S.
Fall weather is treating us to some beautiful days in Northwest Iowa. Highs in the upper 70’s and low 80’s with
sunshine is difficult to complain about. The crops also like this weather as they begin to show signs of maturity.
Corn is moving closer to black layer (physiological maturity) and will begin to dry from the average moisture of 32-
34% down to harvest moisture below 20%. Yields are going to be highly variable depending on soil types, fertility,
and individual field rainfall accumulation.
Earlier maturity soybeans are dropping leaves and turning colors. This is a sign the beginning of harvest is not far
away. Yields look like they will be about average this year. Considerably lower than the record yields we saw is
2016.
The USDA will give us their September crop estimates tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 11:00 AM central time.
Most traders are expecting production cuts in both corn and soybeans. That was the expectations last month and
USDA surprised everyone with much higher than expected numbers.
