All areas Southeast of Storm Lake received rain last week, but some areas had damaging amounts up to 10 inches locally. Usually rain in late August is very welcome but this year it is becoming a point of concern. Some areas had difficulty with harvest last fall from excessively wet fields. Farmers are worried we are setting up for another difficult harvest this year.
This week has felt more like a typical August even though we have flipped the calendar to September. Temps are in the mid to upper 80’s and plentiful sun. Next week’s forecast is back to normal conditions for September.
Corn should benefit from this warm weather by adding kernel depth and test weight. Both things should help add the last few bushels to the corn crop.
Soybeans are actively filling pods and early maturity soybeans are beginning to turn yellow and drop leaves.Harvest is likely 2-3 weeks away for the early maturing soybeans.
Commodity markets have been very choppy lately, mostly spurred by global news headlines of China’s economic slowdown. Soybeans have been more effected than corn as China is the largest buyer of US soybeans.
Cover crops are being aerially seeded this week as an added conservation measure to control erosion and add organic matter to soil. The most common choice for cover crops is cereal rye grass.
