Most parts of Northwest Iowa are still looking pretty good.
Corn is growing rapidly and should begin pollination (tasseling) in the next 7-14 days. We normally worry about
wind and hail damage right before and during pollination. If we avoid storm damage and excessive heat
during pollination, our corn crop should be in pretty good shape. Farms that are well drained are looking
considerably better than farms under stress from excess moisture.
Soybeans are taking advantage of last weeks drier weather and continue to grow rapidly. July and August weather
will ultimately determine where yields will end up.
Grain markets have rallied since the June 30th USDA report although they have been lower so far this week. Crop
conditions released yesterday (Monday) showed improvement in the corn and stayed steady for soybeans.
