Most parts of Northwest Iowa are looking pretty good so far this year. Some areas along US Highway 30 received
locally heavy rainfall last Wednesday with 5+ inches in some places. No major hail was reported.
Corn is growing quickly and should begin pollination (tasseling) in the next 10-14 days. The current mild
temperatures will be welcome during that time as heat stress can disrupt pollination and lower yield. Farms that
are well drained are looking relatively good again this year.
Soybeans are a little short for this time of year, but height is not a good determination of yield in soybeans. Drier
weather would be very beneficial to the young soybean crop. July and August weather will ultimately determine
where yields will end up.
Grain markets have rallied during the last two weeks as rains continue to fall in some of the wettest areas in the
southern cornbelt. Corn has gained about 40 cents, while soybeans have gained nearly a dollar.
The June USDA report comes out on June 30th (Tuesday) at 11 AM central time.
