The planting window has been wide this spring. Depending on how far southeast of Storm Lake really dictated when crops were planted. Much of the corn was planted in April or the first week of May with soybeans following into the second week of May. Wide spread precipitation was received over the weekend of May 13th which slowed progress for the following week. The heaviest amounts were received northeast of Storm Lake, which could be seen by a quick rise in streams and rivers SE of Storm Lake that have headwaters in Palo Alto, Kossuth and Humboldt Counties. Amount of precipitation received was less the further south you go from Storm Lake.
Conditions this week look to be favorable with daytime high temperatures forecasted to reach the mid-80s. We expect planting to be nearly wrapped up this week and producers to be finishing up with their first soybean herbicide application and switching over to start spraying their emerged corn crop. Our next chance (slim) of precipitation is a week out at this time.
Both corn and soybeans will begin growing rapidly. Corn will add a new leaf every 2 to 4 days and soybeans if not emerged, will be up within a week of planting under these conditions.
We remember and honor those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our county this upcoming Memorial Day.
