Corn planting resumed over the weekend with a large percentage of the corn crop Southeast of Storm Lake being planted between last Friday and Wednesday morning when the rain began. Most farmers ran very hard over the weekend and early in the week as the skies cleared and warm temps moved in. Some rain on Wednesday morning will keep farmers out of the fields for another day or two before planting resumes and most corn will be finished. Most of the corn planted in April is beginning to emerge. Time will tell if the cold/wet weather will negatively effect the stand.
Some soybeans have been planted but most farmers have been busy working on corn. The weather looks favorable going forward and will allow soybeans to be planted in the optimal time window of mid-May.
The USDA surprised the markets today when they released their May WASDE (Supply and Demand) reports at11 AM. Both corn and soybean ending stocks were lowered below trade expectations. The corn market responded favorably by closing up 6+ cents for the day.
Domestic soybean supply was lowered but was countered by a record large South American crop. Soybeans lost4 cents by the close of trading.
