Counties of: Calhoun, Webster, Hamilton, Carroll, Greene, Boone, Audubon, Guthrie, Dallas
Cool, wet and windy conditions have been the main storyline over the last week. Most areas Southeast of Storm Lake are still classified as abnormally dry or within moderate drought stage. These conditions are similar to one year ago. The soil temperature has not improved to levels where many producers are comfortable with planting just yet. The diagram pictured above shows most counties trending in the upper 30s to low 40s. The general rule is corn should not be planted until soil temperature is near 50 degrees with forecasted temperatures expected to increase.
The upcoming 10 day forecast does not appear to bring advantageous conditions for widespread planting. Temperatures are expected to improve but there are good chances of precipitation. If precipitation is missed or amounts received is minimal there likely will be many planting the last week of April.
Market prices continue on their upward trend. Most recently weather concerns have been the supportive news. Areas of Brazil that grow the Safrinha corn crop has turned more dry than normal. If unfavorable planting conditions persist, delayed planting domestically will add to the support. The war in the Ukraine, inflation and increased domestic usage are also playing a part in these prices.
