Mid-April is upon us and the weather still feels like February. Another weekend snowstorm covered most of the upper Midwest with measurable amounts of snow and ice. This is normally the time when planters start rolling through the fields as soil conditions allow. With another more snow and ice being called for tonight into Wednesday, we are looking more and more like corn planting will not begin until May.
Most farm operations in Northwest Iowa have enough planting capacity to get the majority of the corn crop planted in a week with soybeans to follow right after. At this point yield potential is still not a concern and switching acreage from corn to soybeans is not really considered for another 4 weeks.
The grain markets have fought back and shown some resilience after threats of tariffs on US ag products being shipped to China. The main focus seems to be on weather at this point.
The pictures below show what it looked like outside our office on Monday morning as we arrived. These really help explain the last picture, which is USDA’s corn planting progress map as of April 16th
