Field conditions were fairly good for harvest in most areas and getting better, until last night when we received
widespread rainfall. Two inches of rain or more was common across Northwest Iowa. This will slow down harvest
for a few days. Farms with poor drainage will take longer to shape up.
Soybeans are close to half harvested around here. The later maturity soybeans are still too green. Yield reports
are very good on most farms. We are seeing many fields yielding 65 to 75 bushels per acre. It looks like this
year’s soybeans are even better than last year’s record crop for this area. Soybean harvest should wrap up by
mid-October if we can dry out.
Corn is drying down in the field nicely. Most corn is testing 20% moisture or less, which is good for early October. We don’t have a lot of corn harvested yet, but farmers will move quickly to corn as soon as the beans are done.So far corn is generally standing well, but we always worry about corn falling over as it dries down. Yield reports in corn are somewhat sporadic so far, but generally yielding better than expected.
