The wet weather has continued into September so far. Crops have plenty of moisture to finish out the season.
Ideally, conditions could start drying out now to get ready for harvest. Excess soil moisture going into fall can
cause harvest delays and increase soil compaction.
Corn is in the dent stage. The kernels are just starting to dry. The hard starch layer “milk line” starts at the top of kernel and works toward the cob. Weather will have very little impact on corn yield now, except for dry down
speed or possible loss form storm damage. We expect to have much more yield variability this year compared to
last. There will be some good yields and some not so good.
Soybeans look very good. The late season rain should increase the size of beans and prevent abortion of the last
pods at the tops of plants. We are seeing some beans dying early due to a fungal plant disease called SDS. This
is more common east of Storm Lake. The early beans are starting to turn yellow as they get closer to maturity.
