Another week of nice normal summer weather has allowed the crops to grow quickly. Most of the corn appears to have found the fertilizer giving it a healthy green color. T he exception is where saturated soils are still limiting root development. These areas are easy to spot; the corn is short, uneven, and the plants are yellowish green.
The soybean crop has also improved this week, but most are quite small f or July. Narrow planted soybeans should have the advantage this year. T he challenge f or the soybean crop will be to get as much vegetate growth as possible to support enough f lowers/pods needed to make decent yields.
USDA’s June 28th acreage estimate sent new crop corn and beans sharply lower by increasing both corn and soybean acres. USDA estimates corn plantings at 97.379 million acres, up 97,000 acres from the March Report, and soybeans are now estimated at 77.728 million acres, up 602,000 acres from March.
