Crops are starting to make the turn towards harvest, with leaves starting to change color on the earliest maturing corn and soybean varieties.
August was a good month weather wise, with above average rainfall and near average temperatures. This should be an ideal set up for good soybean yields, and we are cautiously optimistic about the potential for this crop. Corn, on the other hand, has some issues and we are expecting an above average but not record crop.
The grain markets are trading record yields of both crops. The trade is predicting near 50 bushels per acre for soybeans and 175 bushels per acre of corn. The pro farmer crop tour that finished August 26th concurred with this soybean yield, but indicated corn yields will be closer to 170 bushels per acre. Yield reports will tell the tale, but unless there are big surprises once fields are opened up, we will be dealing with another above trend line crop and a healthy carry over.
