Conditions remain dry in most areas. Saturday brought a sprinkle to some Northern counties. The dry weather has left a crust on top of the ground that some soybeans are struggling to pop through. Many area farmers are replanting some of these crusted areas. Corn is emerged and flourishing with very few concerns at this point. The dry spell should drive the corn to establish a larger root system.
Weed control could be challenging early this year. When conditions are dry, weeds tend to shut off growth and intake of moisture which inhibits the uptake of herbicide as well. Most fields of corn are getting sprayed this week and should show signs of resistance to the herbicide within 7 days if it is going to be an issue.
Grain Markets:
The reports of low crop quality coming out of the eastern corn belt have been slowly driving markets higher. This has allowed some off the farm sales and forward contracting. This rally will be short lived if crop conditions recover shortly (which they have been known to do).
