Soybean planting was pretty well wrapped up by June 1. We have had good rains throughout the area over the last 2 weeks; too much in areas near the Minnesota border, although crop loss won’t be too bad in most places. Cool conditions slowed crop development over the last few weeks, but the forecast for early June looks to be warmer than normal, so crops should progress well with plenty of soil moisture. All things considered we are off to a pretty good start.
Grain markets are uneventful. Planting progress is ahead of normal through a good share of the Midwest, so there is no repeat of last year’s delayed planting rally. Corn demand continues to strengthen a little from Ethanol plants. China trade is still a concern. They are behind on their Phase I Trade deal purchases, and relations are tense over Hong Kong and coronavirus blame.
