Northeast Iowa Crop Conditions

A dry period over the last few days should allow soybeans planting to mostly be finished this week before the next
round of forecast rain. We have not had heavy rain in May, but enough frequency of showers to make finishing soybean planting a challenge. The corn is 2-5 inches tall. The recent cool conditions have delayed development somewhat. The moderate May rains have helped emergence and pre-plant herbicide effectiveness. Fields are mostly clean, and plant populations are good. Broad leaf weed spraying is just getting started.

The grain markets have worked lower as good early corn planting progress and conditions have taken away any weather premium. Very wet conditions in the Southwest corn belt have delayed soybean planting. This may be something to watch as we move forward.
