A wet and cool week over the area. We are fortuate to have had the good weather in late April and early May to virtually finish corn planting in the area. May weather has been more variable and it has been a struggle to finish soybean planting between rain showers. The majority of the corn in the area has emerged and the stands look very good. The earliest planted soybeans have emerged as well. The recent cool weather has slowed development, but we know the calendar is on our side in that regard. So far most areas have missed heavy, pounding rains, but soil moisture is completely full and a drying period would be welcome.
The grain markets have taken a weather premium out of all prices as planting progress across the nation is well ahead of average. There will likely be a few trouble spots develop that are trending too wet or too dry, but overall the crop is off to a good start.
