Corn

Crop Stage: Corn planting is running well behind normal both in Iowa and nationally. Normally, the nation has 47 % of the corn planted by now, this year only 12% is done. Iowa is even slower, with only 8% done vs 56% normally. Locally, very little has been planted. A small window of good weather early last week allowed some f ield work, bef ore rain Tuesday night, f ollowed by snow on Wed. T he snow didnt last long, but has lef t soil too wet to do much until now. Another rain is f orecast f or tomorrow, but af ter that the outlook is drier, which is needed, as the window f or getting corn planted in the optimum time f rame is getting smaller.

Nathan Deters AFM

After a big jump last Monday, the grain markets have worked mostly lower since, even in the f ace of a record slow corn planting pace. T he traders at this point believe that improved moisture in much of the cornbelt benef its yield prospects more than late planting hurts them. Time will tell if this is true. Records from past years show that late planting does not automatically lead to lower yields. If this slow pace continues for another two weeks, I suspect there will be increased worries on yields.
