A welcome rain in the middle of last week helped crop conditions. Temperatures remain on the cool side, limiting any tress. Corn has made it through pollination in good shape, and is in the ear fill stage. Soybeans are filling pods and still blooming in most cases. The recent rain will be beneficial to add more pods. Soybean aphid numbers are increasing and a number of farms are being sprayed.
The latest USDA supply/demand report released yesterday projects increasing yields and carryover thanks to generally good weather this year in most of the main grain growing regions. Corn yield was projected at 167 bu/acre, although most in the trade expect this number to end up at over 170
bu/acre by the time harvest is complete. Soybeans are pegged at 45 bu/acre. There is some possible upside in this number as well, but gains could be limited if the dry conditions that many areas have had over the last month persist through August.
