Crops are progressing at a good pace with beneficial weather. Rainfall has been just enough to keep topsoil moisture conditions adequate, but more would be welcome, especially in the Northern part of the area.Temperatures have been non stressful, with only an occasional day of 90 degrees, followed by cooler temperatures. Nights have been mostly cool, which is beneficial to crop development.
Corn is in the milk stage, and good conditions now will help keep ear length by allowing the kernels on the end to fill. Corn in the area continues to look very good.
Soybeans are in the late bloom to pod fill stage. They are starting to reach the stage where good soil moisture is needed to maximize pod fill. We are starting to see a rapid increase in soybean aphid populations in the area and most fields will likely need to be sprayed over the next two weeks. Dry cool weather is beneficial for the spread of these insects.
