Southeast Iowa Crop Conditions

Most of the area only had one or two days fit to plant last week because of wet fields. This week looks to be wet
and cold also. Low temperatures will be in the 30’s tonight. Soybean planting is getting stretched out, but farmers
managed to get the majority of beans planted in the short windows of opportunity. The last soybeans could take a
few weeks to get planted if the forecast is accurate. The cool wet weather is not good for soybeans, but we don’t
expect any significant problems yet.

The majority of corn stands look very good. Corn growth will slow down from this cool wet weather, but yield
potential should not be affected unless we have widespread flooding or soil temps below 50 for an extended
period.

The Avian influenza (Bird Flu) continues to claim more poultry operations in Northwest Iowa. This is putting
pressure on basis levels locally. Soybeans are working lower because of low export sales, high expected new crop
carryout, and large South American crop.
