Wet weather is really slowing things down in all of Northwest Iowa. The forecast for the next 2 weeks doesn’t look to improve much either. Southeast of Storm Lake there may be just as much corn harvested as there are beans. Normally we harvest the beans ahead of the corn but the weather has made soybean harvest come to a halt while allowing a day here and there when corn can be harvested.
The corn that has been harvested has been yielding very well and drier than expected for the harvest date. The stalk quality is an issue this year; any significant wind will likely cause corn to fall over and make harvest slower/more difficult. The good new is drying costs will be lower than normal this fall.
The announcement of a new trade deal with Canada and Mexico has given the corn and soybean markets a much needed bust. Any significant rally will likely be capped by abundant supplies and ahead of normal planting pace in South America.
