Planting began last week. Our first planting reports from our Southwest District came in Friday and Saturday, although we know of fields planted earlier than that. Soil conditions are very good. It is amazing how quickly conditions can improve when Mother Nature provides a stretch of favorable weather.
Today’s weekly USDA Crop Progress Report shows 4% corn planted in Iowa as of today, with 6% done in the US. No beans reported; however, a few early birds have planted beans. Lots of anhydrous ammonia still being applied for nitrogen. Planting should wait for a week after anhydrous is applied so those fields are looking at the end of April or first of May. Rain is forecast for most days next week.
Crop prices continue to slide south. They are still within the established trading range. Prices tend to be highest sometime during the March-June time frame, sometimes to mid-July. So far, that’s not the case this year.
Pro Farmer newsletter reported this weekend that we are 95% of the way to a trade deal with China. Hopes are for Presidential signatures by late May or early June. They do mention that the last 5% can be the toughest!
